The history of Sarrebourg begins around 800 BC. Around the year 20 BC, the city was an important crossing point on one of the main Roman roads: the Décumane. Around the year 235, the first invasions of the Alamans and the Franks almost completely destroyed the city. From the 12th century to the 15th century, Sarrebourg was owned by the bishopric of Metz. Bishop Jacques de Lorraine established a collegiate Saint-Étienne chapter there in 1256. The city passed to the Dukes of Lorraine in 1464. It was besieged by the Burgundians in 1476. It was the Duke of Lorraine René II who freed it. Then, Sarrebourg was part of the Bailiwick of Germany of Lorraine. Sarrebourg becomes the capital of a royal provost under Louis XIV, by an edict of November 1661. In 1790, Sarrebourg enters the department of Meurthe, whose prefecture is Nancy. In the Treaty of Frankfurt in 1871, the city of Sarrebourg was annexed to the new German Empire.

Die Geschichte von Sarrebourg beginnt um 800 v. Um das Jahr 20 v. Chr.

(UCGL)

Armorial markers dating from 1600 and 1773 carried on one side the half-branches and on the other the arms of the chapter of the cathedral of Metz. Under the First Empire the city of Sarrebourg, wishing to change its coat of arms, asked to bear the following arms: « Azure on the silver bridge masonry of sand supported by a silver river and surmounted in chief by three antlers of even ». The shield was surmounted by a wall crown supporting a virgin who held in her hands an antler of sand; for support two lions. This inviolate virgin illustrated the motto of Sarrebourg.

Die Hower Affe = the monkeys of Hoff (district of Sarrebourg.)

It seems that this village once had a zoological garden populated by a few monkeys, which is why the inhabitants were given this nickname.

According to another source, this compound name was given to locals who live in a certain affluence, given that they are proud and keen to follow fashion and, it is said, imitate the « high flight » of the city and the « ape » in every detail.

The Musée du Pays de Sarrebourg was created in 1905. It hosts the many discoveries made in the subsoil of the region. Its purpose is to prevent them from being deposited in other places. This is the case with the altar of the god Mithras, today one of the centerpieces of Metz museums. Originally archaeological, the museum is now completed by a space dedicated to Marc Chagall. There is an exhibition of earthenware and porcelain. They come from the manufacture very close to Niderviller. Due to its strong acquisition policy, the museum moved to new premises in June 2003.
